What Value Engineering Should—and Should Not—Do
Value engineering should protect the owner’s priorities while finding a more efficient path. It may involve simplifying geometry, adjusting spans, changing finish systems, revising phasing, relocating utilities, reducing redundant work, or selecting materials with better availability. A useful alternative explains the cost, schedule, durability, and operational tradeoffs.
It should not quietly remove necessary scope, lower performance below the project’s needs, or push unresolved costs into change orders. The goal is a better-informed project, not a deceptively low number.
