Information That Improves an Excavation Budget

  • Topographic survey: existing contours and boundaries show how much material must move and where water naturally travels.
  • Geotechnical information: soil type, groundwater, bearing capacity, frost susceptibility, and fill recommendations affect pad and foundation work.
  • Civil plan: proposed elevations, drainage, utilities, access, and site improvements define the actual excavation scope.
  • Building reactions and slab use: foundations, heavy equipment, rack loads, lifts, and traffic may require different subgrade preparation.
  • Material balance: knowing whether usable soil can remain on site helps identify export, import, trucking, and disposal costs.

Common Site Problems We Plan Around

Mountain West projects regularly encounter variable soils, shallow rock, high groundwater, snowmelt, limited access, winter conditions, and incomplete utility information. Existing grades may also conflict with door thresholds, accessible routes, loading areas, or future phases. These issues are less disruptive when they are investigated before mobilization and discussed as part of the whole building plan.

Our field experience helps us sequence stripping, underground work, pad construction, foundations, and exterior improvements so finished work is not repeatedly disturbed.

Excavation for Storage and Steel Projects

Self-storage facilities require consistent drive grades, positive drainage at every unit door, efficient vehicle circulation, gate and security conduit, and room for future rows. Steel shops and warehouses may require heavy-use aprons, oversized-door access, loading areas, deep utility services, and equipment foundations. The site plan must reflect how the property will operate after turnover.
